Vagrant story golem5/10/2023 Either this or Point&Click/Resident Evil style of puzzles where you had to find something, mix with something else and use it. Back at the days they were pretty common in games and they were pretty much the way to put a puzzle in your game. The block puzzles, I didn't even remember those. If I'm not mistaken the director is the same person who directed Final Fantasy Tactics, another confusing game towards the middle. I also felt the story confusing but I honestly think this the idea of the director. Man I loved this game back at the time but I also had many issues with it back then, so I can't even imagine someone fresh to the PS1 era of games picking it up. As I said before I'm not that experienced with JRPGs, but I have access to Threads of Fate, Okage: Shadow King, and Ys VIII so wish me luck with those games! I bought it for like 4 dollars on the ps3 and it was definitely worth that much. Lots of people love this game so I would still recommend it if you find it interesting. ![]() I know I had a lot of negatives, but the game was only 20 hours and I thought it was cool. If someone's willing to link me to a detailed summary of the story then that would be appreciated because I'm sure what's there is good, I just had a hard time keeping up.Īlso the final boss was a bitch to defeat. The cutscenes would usually come after killing a boss, but they felt so unrelated to what I was doing at the time that I had a hard time remembering the details of the story. It doesn't help that I took a two week break before finishing the game, but it always felt like I was playing catch up with what the characters were talking about. Saving takes like 20 seconds so I never bothered with the chest. There's a universal chest you can use, but you have to save the game everytime you want to use it. The problem is that you can't drop anything you're currently wearing while looting so sometimes I would have to give up on pieces of armor because I couldn't discard the glove I was wearing. Ashley can only hold 8 weapons and 16 pieces of armor at a time which means you're constantly dropping stuff for new items. Changing the gems on the weapons requires you to go through like 7 menus which is also annoying. ![]() The quick select is great, but it takes forever to switch weapons and because of the difficulty at the beginning Most of the game is experimenting with and switching your weapons. The menus in general are pretty clunky as well. You can be sure that once they started throwing those weird magical boxes at me I went to the internet for all the solutions. The platforming seemed finicky because I could never get Ashley to reliably grab the ledge and the box puzzles are just the worst. The box puzzles and platforming are so annoying. Now we have some of the tedious aspects of the game. I never really crafted any weapons or used any of my offensive spells. This game's pretty complicated, but you can easily ignore most of it to finish the game. Also after beating a room there's no reason not to just stand around and wait for all your health and mana to regenerate, so I did exactly that everytime. ![]() At this point the only way for an enemy to kill you was to one shot you with a spell, which happened a lot if I'm being honest. There's a billion bosses in this game, but sometimes I didn't even bother to analyze their stats and just applied the buffs. The game gets really easy in the mid to late game when all you have to do is attach some elemental gems on your weapon followed by a strength and elemental buff to completely destroy anything the game throws at you. I enjoyed using the analyze spell and trying to find any chinks in the boss's defense, but unfortunantly it doesn't really last like this for too long. Something I found out later was that Vagrant Story has a pretty unforgiving difficulty curve in the beginning. This game doesn't have any merchants or any other characters out of cutscenes, which made Ashley's journey feel very lonely.Īlright I didn't do much research when picking up the game, so I was pretty confused when I came up to the stone golem boss and was doing 0 damage with all my weapons. It was interesting to learn about Ashley's past and this game was way more cinematic than I expected. ![]() It has cool characters within this religious conspiracy thing and a dark oppressive atmosphere in the dungeons. I used to think that ps1 graphics were too dated to hold up in any regard other than goofy comedy, but this game proved me wrong. Starting with the pros Man this game is cool. It's a very interesting game to say the least and I don't regret finishing it, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed most of it. I don't have a ton of experience with JRPGs outside of Final Fantasy or Fire Emblem and I'm pretty young, so I recently decided to buy and finish Vagrant Story on my ps3.
